A Land Acknowledgment is a formal statement from an entity that recognizes Indigenous people as the land’s original inhabitants and acknowledges the enduring relationship between Indigenous people and their traditional territories. A Land Acknowledgment is not meant to be solely in the past tense; it is meant as a minor healing gesture towards Natives alive today.

It is important to unpack how we contribute to and benefit from settler colonialism in the same vein that we unpack racism. If we wish to bridge the gap between the settler culture and the Indigenous whose land was unceded, that involves first acknowledging harm and then considering alternate ways forward. Including an action statement at the end (last paragraph of our Land Acknowledgment) is equally important because it keeps the Acknowledgment from seeming performative; acknowledging a debt is only the first step. The next step is to pay the debt back as best as we can possible.

According to the 2020 Census, Cook County has around 16,000 Native American residents. These Indigenous residents aren’t a sad story from the colonial era who all died off; they are part of a living, ever-changing culture, and more than that, they are part of our community. Part of the Indigenous protocol is acknowledging the land; this is a small way we can honor Indigenous customs instead of continuing a system of cultural colonialism.
